$2.4 Million Grant to Support Research on PTSD in Veterans
The MUM Research Institute and a Veterans Administration center have together received a $2.4 million federal grant to study the effect of the Transcendental Meditation program on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in veterans.
The randomized controlled clinical trial will compare the Transcendental Meditation program to prolonged-exposure treatment -- a trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy considered to be the VA's "gold standard." A third group will receive health education. There will be a total of 210 subjects, with the entire study taking four years to complete.
"There's a national crisis taking place with PTSD among the military returning from Afghanistan and Iraq," said MUM professor Sanford Nidich, the study's principal investigator. "PTSD is a common, disabling, and costly condition among veterans, affecting 10% to 20% of this high-risk population."
Two previous pilot studies conducted on PTSD and the experiences of veterans across the country suggest that the Transcendental Meditation program can have a significant impact on reducing PTSD.
The primary success of the treatment will be measured using a standard assessment called the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale. Other study outcomes will include depression, psychological distress, quality of life, substance usage, and physiological/biochemical mechanisms.
"The Veterans Administration acknowledges that it has a huge investment in mental health care, with the large numbers of veterans with PTSD in effect overwhelming the system," Dr. Nidich said.
He said the VA wants to provide a variety of evidence-based treatments to more successfully treat all veterans. Only about 50% of the veterans who undergo treatment with its gold standard prolonged-exposure therapy receive meaningful benefits.
"The Transcendental Meditation technique may be more suitable to veterans reluctant to focus on past trauma through traditional psychotherapeutic approaches," Dr. Nidich said. "In addition, it offers holistic benefits not widely seen in other treatment programs."
The clinical trial will provide further data on the efficacy of the Transcendental Meditation program for combat-related PTSD, and inform future military mental health policy decisions.
Other investigators include Robert Schneider, John Salerno, Maxwell Rainforth, and Carolyn King. Consulting on the research will be psychiatrists Norman Rosenthal and James Brooks. The research team will also include Paul Mills, who received his PhD in physiology from MUM.

New MIS Professor Enriches MSCS Program
Dr. Anil K. Maheshwari
The MUM Computer Science Department is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Anil K. Maheshwari to the faculty. According to Department Chairman Dr. Keith Levi, "Professor Maheshwari brings a wealth of MIS knowledge and experience to our curriculum. His courses will provide students with real-world tools to link the needs of businesses with the development of their administrative and commercial software products."
As Associate Professor of Management Information Systems and Computer Science, Dr. Maheshwari has joint appointments in both the Management and Computer Science Departments. While teaching in both the MSCS and MBA programs, he will teach students how to bridge the gap between management and computer science, so that they better understand the rationale behind the software they develop. One of Professor Maheshwari's primary goals is to also develop an MIS certification program that our MSCS graduates can pursue to enhance their career potential. Latest MSCS student entry largest in several years
On July 3rd, an additional 10 students enrolled. This is the largest entry since the economic recession began in 2008. The current market for our software engineer internship students is excellent, with salaries averaging $60,000 to $70,000 per year, and many students getting multiple job offers.
Distinguished Professor Joins the Faculty
The MUM Computer Science Department is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Premchand S. Nair to the faculty. Professor Nair's background in object oriented design with Java, and relational database design present a perfect fit for MUM's highly regarded MS in Computer Science program, which emphasizes software engineering with object oriented programming. He will be teaching courses on object oriented design using Java, relational database systems, and advanced database systems.
In the past 14 years, Dr. Nair has authored or co-authored eight books on Java programming, database design, and fuzzy mathematics, along with numerous journal and conference publications. His latest book is Java Programming Fundamentals: Problem Solving Through Object Oriented Analysis and Design (2010, CRC Press). More about Professor Nair.

Computer Science Distance Education Courses Now Available Worldwide
The Computer Science Department at Maharishi University of Management now offers our Master's level computer science courses by Distance Education (DE). If you are interested in completing the whole degree by DE, then please complete our online application. Please note that in order to take the degree program, it will be necessary to live in a country or location where you can learn the Transcendental Meditation (TM) program. "The most active areas in computer science and the computing profession today are the areas of software development, and distributed and parallel computing. Software development including advances in programming languages is very important and interesting because the creation of large, complex, and correct software systems is probably the biggest challenge in the discipline and profession today.
In our curriculum we have courses in software development and software engineering, and a course in software design and design patterns and frameworks as basic tools and approaches to this area.
In distributed systems and software we have courses in web programming and distributed systems and architecture, and parallel programming. All of our faculty regularly monitor and work in these leading edge and advanced areas, and incorporate new developments in their courses. It is these new and advancing areas that make the study and application of computer science so interesting, and such a dynamic and active field to study and to work in!"
