What do employers say about our students?

"Leonisa continues to be a big asset to our organization. She is working on the 10-Gen project that is a complicated application, yet she is handling it like a pro. She also took over the RADAR applications from a contractor who left, and was able to learn it very quickly and improve it further. She also has a good disposition and is always willing to help and eager to take on new work. We have enjoyed having Leonisa work with us."
--Tennessee Valley Authority

"We are loving your students here so please let me know if you have anyone else who wants to move to Redmond and is interested in contract positions with Excell at one of the world's largest software companies. Your students have excellent technical skills, especially in the cutting edge technologies that hiring managers are looking for. Most of all, your students have been great to work with. They are friendly and flexible and motivated to interview and get placed."
--Excell Data, a CompuCom Company

"I wanted to let you know what a great job Battulga is doing for Volt at Microsoft. He was recognized today at an “Employee Recognition” luncheon for Volt employees at Microsoft. Battulga also was selected as one of our outstanding employees for December 2008.”
--Volt Services Group

“Jane did a spectacular job for us on the Partner Power 2 project. And now she's shining through once again for her efforts on the Online Mortgage Application (OMA) project. The Project Manager and a few others have made comments to me of how thorough and detailed her work is. These are great qualities to have in the testing realm. She's very dedicated and takes ownership of what she does. Her work is of great quality — another very important aspect of testing. Jane is self-motivated and a great team player. She always adds value to the projects she works on.”
--Wells Fargo Home Mortgage

“After being with Vitech for 6 months, Mardig is performing at the same level as developers who have been with us for 5 years.”

Graduation ends in a splash!

During graduation exercises at the end of June, 93 students from 26 countries received Master of Science degrees in our Computer Professionals Program. This is one of the largest, most international, and successful graduate computer science programs in the U.S., with more than 700 graduates from 80 nations in the last 14 years.

Formal graduation activities began with a delicious catered outdoor dinner for graduates, family and guests. Relatives from distant locations including Nepal, Jordan, Ethiopia and The Philippines came to celebrate the happy occasion.

Following the dinner, MUM community members packed Dalby Hall to experience the highlight of the year--the annual awards ceremony where each academic department honors its outstanding graduate, and the winners speak of great appreciation to the faculty, staff and fellow students for their fortunate education here.

Because the MSCS class is so large, two deserving graduates were honored this year: Erdembilegt (Ebe) Janchivdorj from Mongolia, has received praise while doing his practical training at a software company on the MIT campus in Cambridge, MA; and Najeeb Najeeb from Iraq, who is now on the Computer Science faculty.

Saturday afternoon Graduation was held in the Golden Dome--highlighted by the main address by Stephen Collins, the distinguished American actor, writer and musician.

The weather was cooperative throughtout the weekend. Celebrations ended on a high note with the annual Computer Science picnic at Waterworks Park, where students, graduates, faculty and guests enjoyed wonderful food, and a variety of recreational activities, including the great canoe race. National pride was evident as fun-loving teams from Cambodia, Ethiopia, Mongolia, Nepal, and The Phillipines competed with teams from mixed nations. It was obvious that some had never canoed before, but everyone had a great time. The race ended with a splash as students waiting on the dock greeted returning canoes with blasts of water, and canoeists splashed back with their paddles.

IT Hiring Expected to be Robust in Second Half of 2010

eWeek (06/02/10) Sears, Don E.

Demand for technology professionals is rising and is expected to remain strong through the end of the year. Companies continue to hire entry-level positions, but demand for mid- and senior-level positions also is increasing. Nearly 80 percent of 800 companies polled in a new hiring survey are increasing jobs in the second half of 2010, according to Dice Holdings. "Businesses seem to be gradually loosening their grip on the hiring process as the economy improves," says Dice Holdings CEO Scot Melland. Technology job openings continue to lead the vacancies, according to a Conference Board report. "Computer and Mathematical Science occupations experienced the largest May gain, up 18,100 to 567,600, their highest level since October 2008, after a much larger April rise [of] 32,500," the report says. "The May gain reflects in part continued increases in demand for computer systems analysts and computer software engineers (applications)."

Farewell event for October 2009 students

Recently elected Global Student Council representative Surendra Bajracharya organized a well-attended farewell event for October 2009 entry MSCS students who are currently completing their on-campus coursework. 75-80 students packed the shelter at Waterworks Park adjacent to campus in a celebration featuring lots of pizza, ice cream, sodas and other treats, along with music and dancing.

All afternoon cameras flashed, and students enjoyed each others company. Thank you Surendra for a fun-filled, family send-off for the students who will soon be leaving Fairfield for their curricular practical training jobs throughout the US.
