Computer Science Department Providing Latest Knowledge & Technology

Computer Science is a quick moving and rapidly evolving area of technology. One important part of our MS for Computer Professionals program is that we are always upgrading our curriculum and facilities, so that students will have direct experience with the latest and most up-to-date aspects of Computer Science and the computing profession.

In this last year we have added new courses in data mining, cloud computing, and mobile device programming; added three new Ph.D. CS faculty, and are now upgrading all of our labs and classroom computers.

This full upgrade will mean that students always have the latest in computers available in their classes and for lab projects.

Employers appreciate our students

According to Julie Stephens, Ph.D., Director of Curricular Practical Training Career Placement in our Computer Professionals Career Center, "One of the main reasons IT recruiters and employers continue hiring MUM intern students is that the students are well prepared, and ready to make meaningful contributions as soon as they begin work. The Computer Science Department's commitment to latest knowledge and latest technology is greatly appreciated by employers."

Ethiopian and Eritrean Computer Science Graduate Students at Home at MUM

Walking through the McLaughlin Building, home of the School of Computer Science and Mathematics at Maharishi University of Management, you meet students with a rich diversity of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. While more than 40 nationalities are usually represented in the MSCS program on-campus at any given time, it becomes apparent that there are more Ethiopians than any other nationality represented. In fact, since our MSCS program began in 1996, the largest number of graduates come from Ethiopia. Out of 1205 graduates, 289 are Ethiopian. Among currently enrolled students on-campus and doing internships around the U.S., Ethiopians are also the largest group represented with 155. Read the newsletter here.

We are pleased to have a new faculty member-- Dr. Ankit Chaudhary.  Dr. Chaudhary has been working in a post doctoral research position at the University of Iowa this last year.   Prior to that he obtained his PhD from one of the top universities in India.  His research focus was in a very interesting area of gesture recognition, which looks to be one of the next big things in computer interface technologies.  He has an impressive publication and presentations record, has been awarded 7 grants for his work, including 4 from Microsoft. To complement his academic strengths, Professor Chaudhary has  good software development experience, which will benefit students when he teaches an Algorithms course in October.

MUM MSCS Student Zheng Yang creates Windows App Featured by Microsoft

Zheng Yang: Gravilux for Windows

MUM ComPro student Zheng Yang (February 2010 entry) recently created a mobile application called Gravilux which was featured in the Windows Store under the Entertainment category by Microsoft out of 50,000 apps.

Gravilux is an interactive musical starfield visualizer: it's a combination of music, animation, art, and science. As you touch the screen, gravity draws simulated stars to your fingertips. You can tease and twist the particles into galaxies, or explode them like a supernova. You can color the stars by their speed, and make them dance to the music from your play list. You can change parameters including gravity and number of stars, and enable antigravity and color. Multiple fingers and multiple people can touch the screen at once, collaborating or competing.

Learn more about Zheng Yang here.
